An epidemic health problem that currently affects many people is “nervous stomach”. Increased stress and anxieties can result in stomach problems starting from building up of gases and the presence of stomach ulcers. The stomach contains acid that breaks down the food that we eat. It is necessary to consult the physician if one experiences nervous stomach symptoms, before it complicates.
Acid Reflux
This is a symptom of a nervous stomach in which there’s regurgitation of gastric acid in the esophagus, thus throat feels like it’s heating up. It results in stress and pain especially when the burning sensation lasts longer.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
This is a symptom that results from stomach dysfunction in the digesting of food. This is more a physiologic than psychological factor. Although anxiety can trigger IBS, still, that’s not its main reason.
Nervous stomach symptoms (NSS) occur in the majority of the population which is typically referred as Irritable bowel syndrome. In particular cases like hypertensive patients; they might experience multiple anxieties which can lead to IBS. Most likely, the NSS can start with a few gas attacks and can worsen resulting in ulcers. Both NSS and IBS are disorders related to diminished intestinal muscle contractions
Experiencing IBS, you may alternately have episodes of diarrhea or constipation at times. This happens when the causative agent is not identified because of diagnostic failure. A major triggering factor of NSS is also “stress”. When there is excessive gastric secretion, it affects the whole digestive system thus creating intense gastric pain.
IBS Signs and Symptoms to Watch Out
You can experience heartburn, nausea, spastic colon, bloating and belching. The primary symptom is Acid reflex, a burning sensation in the throat due to regurgitation of gastric acid into the esophagus. This is stressful because it causes extreme pain in the throat.
Another related symptom is Irritable Bowel Syndrome that is a physiological process dysfunction. NSS worsens with stress though it’s just a triggering factor. Doctors can order medication to alleviate stress but individualized stress management is necessary. You can try fitness programs and yoga to minimize your stress and anxiety.
During the excessive production of hydrochloric acid, our stomach lining usually inflames then bleeds resulting in a gastric ulcer. This is another NSS symptom. Normally, we have acid in our stomach but just enough to ease digestion. But with its excessive production, gastric pain can occur. Immediate treatment is needed for painful ulcers that are commonly caused by contaminated food.
You may have several gaps in communication between the nervous and digestive system. It is caused by altered bowel movement due to imbalanced diet and anxiety.
Relieving a Nervous Stomach
IBS is just a temporary problem in the intestine. You just need to have proper diet, accurate medication and stress management to alleviate stomach upset. Avoid drinking milk beverages, coffee and eating fatty foods. Unlike the traditional treatment, physicians rely on the past medical history and symptoms rather than diagnostics.
