Nervous Stomach

A nervous stomach is one of those awkward problems a lot of people have to deal with, since it very often comes on during an important occasion. You could be getting an interview for a job you’ve been hoping to get for so long, or you could be taking that entrance exam for that college you’ve always dreamed of getting into, or you could finally be asking out the pretty girl you’ve always had your eyes on but never had the nerve to approach. In any case, one word to describe having a nervous stomach is without a doubt, “inconvenient”. The nervous stomach is known in the medical field as IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If you have IBS, you experience an array of symptoms associated with the illness and as a result of being too stressed or too nervous.

The anxiety in people with IBS is enough to upset their stomach and set off symptoms like diarrhea, constipation and a burning pain in the stomach.

Symptoms of IBS in women are constipation or diarrhea, and sometimes both but in alternation. The unpredictable nature of the symptoms can be a cause of embarrassment but thankfully, there are ways to cope with the symptoms. With a combination of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical means, you can manage your nervous stomach. Some obvious remedies are of course relaxation techniques to help fight off your anxiety and nervousness and help get your stomach settled down as well, and you can take some oral medications that target the stomach to control your symptoms.

If the symptoms you experience like indigestion, bloating, or any alteration in your bowel movements have been plaguing you for some time, getting medical advice from a doctor is also a good action to take. The symptoms of a nervous stomach can also be indicative of other ailments so it is best to have these other possibilities ruled out. These other potential reasons include cancers, gallstones or microbial problems. If you do have an underlying problem, then you’ll be thankful that you got yourself checked by a doctor soon enough so you can stop it from getting any worse.

Medications for IBS or the nervous stomach are available in any drug store. Some of these medications will require a prescription, but some can be bought easily enough over the counter. These over-the-counter drugs include antacids, antihistamines and medicines that contain simethicone which ease the symptoms by reducing the pain and bloating associated with too much build-up of gas. If you prefer taking naturally made remedies then Kava Kava and Valerian Root also help with a nervous stomach.

If these medications do not help with your symptoms, then you need to see a doctor to find out what is really going on. Symptoms can start off really mild and seemingly harmless at first but you never really know if something worse is going on. Symptoms can progress to serious complications if not treated immediately enough so never put off an appointment with your doctor to make sure you are in good health.
